Dr. Jan Nijman

Geographer

Dr. Nijman is Emeritus professor of geography at the University of Amsterdam and distinguished university professor of urban studies and geosciences at Georgia State University. His interests are in urban and regional development, urban history, and sustain- able urbanism. He is a former member of the National Geographic Committee for Research and Exploration and former chair of the National Geographic Global Exploration Fund in Europe. He has authored seven books, including editing Amsterdam’s Canal District: Origins, Evolution, and Future Prospects (University of Toronto Press, 2020). He is a former Guggenheim Fellow and recipient of the John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize of the American Association of Geographers.
